A Picture Perfect Stay-cation Day

Posted on 05/03/14 by Laura

This challenge seems like it should be really easy but with one week down already, I am learning that it is actually difficult to truly make the most of the place up that you. It is much easier to be swallowed up by the business of life and just go to bed early after a long day at work!

Yesterday on the other hand was one of those days that was truly perfection for me. I had taken the day off of work because my best friend, Carly is in town for a few days. She used to live here, but 6 years ago, her husband took a job in Virginia and they moved their family there.

The day started off with breakfast at a delicious local place. Breakfast out is probably one of my most favorite things to do! The snuggling of. Carly’s 7 month old, Cooper wasn’t bad either!

Then, with friends in tow, we all loaded together for a quick trip to the Gulf of Mexico. For those of you who don’t know… Slim and I actually live here- but life gets busy and time gets away. Every time I take the walk down to the beach and feel the sand between my toes, I wonder why I don’t make it so much more of a priority.

My friend Erin lives in a beautiful home in a local neighborhood, so after the beach, we headed to their community pool. This was pretty much the greatest part of the day for me. Sitting in the sun with a cold Piña Colada, enjoying this beauty. Ahhhh- I kept having to tell myself that this was actually ‘real life’!

To close out what could have possibly been one of the greatest days ever-, we went to dinner at Waterside Shops. It doesn’t take much to make me happy, but a stroll through Anthropologie is one of those things. For me, this store is a small piece of Heaven.

The only thing that could have made yesterday better would have been having my love with me. I am excited for a fun weekend with him! Happy Saturday, friends! <3- Laura

When Acts of Kindness Come Back to You

Posted on 12/10/13 by Laura

Acts of kindness is truly the most wonderful time of the year for me.  For those of you who are new to the page, we do not repeat any challenges besides this one. There is something so special that happens in those awkward moments when you do something kind and out of the ordinary for someone.  People do not know what to do or think.  I love it!

Last Monday I was able to ‘pay it backward’ as someone on the Facebook page called it.  I was standing in line at Starbucks and I got that urge.  I knew I had to buy her coffee.  I got to the counter and told Maday, one of the morning baristas what I would have and that I would like to buy the lady behind me whatever she might want.  She was taken aback and told me I didn’t have to, and there it was… My favorite awkward few seconds.  She thanked me over and over and then we parted ways.

I feel like in giving the kindness, I get such fulfillment.  My week was made.

On Thursday morning, I was running a few minutes late and so I wasn’t going to stop, but I decided that I really needed a cup of coffee.  I ran in and hopped in line.  It wasn’t until I was almost at the counter And I was fidgeting with my phone to pull up my app to pay that I heard the words “and whatever she would like”. There in front of me stood the lady from Monday and now the tables were turned and I was saying the awkward thank you.

As I drove away, my heart was happy for the reminder that the good you do, will always come back to you.   Give and keep on giving, friends!

Speaking of giving, we would love to give you a Christmas card.  If you are interested, but haven’t sent us your address yet, email us at: with your name and address and we’ll be sure to add you to the list!

Lastly, I want to leave you all with one of the coolest, most magical acts of kindness at Christmastime that I’ve ever seen! (Plus it’s a BRILLIANT marketing campaign… because Slim is in marketing for a living, he wont stop going nuts over it.)

An inspiring note from a TN40D’er and our new #ChooseLove t-shirts!

Posted on 11/19/13 by Laura

We wanted to share this incredible story from one of our favorite people on the planet, Nichole Rheiner. Nichole posted this on her Facebook page last night:

“Tonight was a total win. My son and I went to Target to grab some groceries and found an awesome smartphone coupon for $10 off. When we got to checkout, the sweet lady in front of us was rationing groceries with the cashier asking how much each item would add to her total, and ended up leaving a few things behind. Instantly thinking of Slim and Laura’s The Next Forty Days kindness challenge, I asked the cashier to add the items to my bill, threw them in a bag and told my son to run after her and explain she’d forgotten a few things. He smiled ear to ear giving her that bag, and then we jammed out all the way home to No Sleep til Brooklyn and Pinball Wizard. I am so thankful that I had a few extra bucks and even more thankful for my son Zac, who probably has the best personality on earth, especially for a 13 year old. Love you son. Thanks for helping me #chooselove

We’ve been so inspired seeing so many people embrace the #ChooseLove mentality and partake in #RandomActsOfKindness with others around them! This story was the final push that we needed to launch our new shirt a little earlier than we had been planning.

You can pre-order our new “Choose Love” shirt here:

These are available in S-6XL and Ladies S-XL. The pre-order price is just $18, and if there is enough interest we will stock them year-round (although the price will go to $20-25)

For those concerned, we don’t actually keep any money from the sale of these shirts. The proceeds will go directly to help people and families in need this holiday season. Think of it as doing an act of kindness and having a shirt to show for it.

We hope you like them! Be sure to share this story and picture and tag your friends!

Choose love today, friends!

ACT OF KINDNESS: Paying the elephant necklace forward

Posted on 11/16/13 by Laura

Acts of Kindness is my most favorite 40 day challenge.  There is something so special that happens when you catch someone totally off guard by doing something nice for them.

As you know, Megan gifted me her elephant necklace yesterday.

This morning, as I was getting dressed, I picked out an elephant necklace and put it on. I hadn’t received the gift from Megan yet because Slim was already asleep by the time I got home last night.

Tonight, after work, I went to my Starbucks for a cup of coffee to unwind from a difficult work day.  As I ordered, Katie- the barista mentioned that she loved my necklace and had a thing for elephants.  I told her that I loved them too and then went on to drink my coffee.

When Slim arrived to meet me, he pulled out the gift from Megan.  As soon as he did, I knew what I had to do.

I took my elephant necklace off, and put the one from Megan on as I walked up to the counter and gave my elephant necklace to Katie.  The look on her face was priceless- and made it so worth it.

Today, #ChooseLove, friends! <3 Laura

PS. Sorry for the poor image, there was a line so we had to scramble to get this shot. haha

ACT OF KINDNESS: The meaning of life and “the tip.”

Posted on 11/12/13 by Laura

It is important that say early on that during our 40-Days of Kindness challenge, we’ll be posting a lot of pictures and updates about things that we are doing. These are meant to give you ideas and inspire you, not to make ourselves look good or to brag.

Many of our “Acts of Kindness,” (whether they be planned or random) will remain anonymous and kept of the page, but there will be plenty that we post up. Please understand our hearts as we post about this challenge: we aren’t posting for the recognition, but rather an effort to encourage you to stretch yourself in acts of kindness to others this holiday season.

With that being said, last night Slim took me out for a nice dinner for my birthday. We LOVE Ruby Tuesday for some odd reason, so I chose to celebrate there.

The hostess said “if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask me!” In typical Slim form, Slim cocked his head to the side and asked our hostess what the meaning of life was. She was clearly caught of guard and simply responded “I don’t really know, actually.”

Slim smiled and said, “well, I’ll tell you. It’s love. All of life is about love. Love of yourself, others around you, strangers.. we were put on earth to love each other and bless those around you.”

She was clearly creeped out by my neo-hippe hubby, but you could see it actually sank in her head a bit.

After a nice meal, we got the check. Slim smiled at me and I knew instantly what he would do. He had already hugged and thanked a couple veterans for their service, stopped by a local Starbucks to pick up coffee to surprise a friend at work, but apparently his acts of kindness weren’t done for the day. He left our server a nice tip and scribbled the words “CHOOSE LOVE” on the check before walking out.

We hope that our server was blessed, and that she would pay it forward to someone else as well.

Today, choose love. Choose to look for ways to help someone in need, or to just put a smile on someone’s face.

Slim mentioned yesterday that we would be issuing daily challenges to help you find ways to bless others with an act of kindness. Today’s challenge is simple: smile at everyone you see today, and go out of your way to compliment them. It could be on their smile, their shoes or outfit, whatever the case may be just make someone feel special today.

Thank you all for being on this journey with us! We love you! <3 Laura
